Home insurance is one of the most important insurance products on the market, because for a relatively small amount of money, you can protect a huge asset. If you are unhappy with the coverage you originally received (or if you don’t know what type of coverage you received), you should consider upgrading your home insurance. There are a few things that you can do to fully upgrade home insurance products.
1. Upgrade to a HOC, HOB, HO5, or HO3 home insurance policy. These four policy types offer the best protection available on the home insurance market. The HOC and HO5 insurance policies offer a little better protection on personal property than do the HOB and HO3, but overall, all four policies should give you ample protection for the home.
2. Endorse your policy with water protections. There are four types of water damage protections you can have on your home insurance policy. They are sudden and accidental water damage, water backup, foundation water damage, and slow leak water damage. Most high end policies (those listed above) come with at least sudden and accidental water damage coverage, and may come with more. It is rare to see a policy include all four. It’s easy, however, to add them to your policy for an additional premium. Endorse means to add, and if you are willing to pay for it, most companies will allow you to endorse anything!
3. Schedule your valuables on your policy. Most insurance policies today offer you the ability to schedule your personal property. To schedule means to specifically list an item (a watch, necklace, etc.) as having coverage. In most cases, this will require a recent appraisal or bill of sale. The benefits of scheduling personal property with most companies are that you a) pay no deductible to replace the item b) ensure that you get 100% full value for the item, and c) get coverage for the item even if it’s lost! These three benefits to scheduling personal property are pretty standard, but check with your home insurance company first just to be sure.
If you apply three suggestions listed above you will have fully upgraded home insurance coverage. Although it may cost a few bucks more a month to upgrade home insurance, it’s well worth the extra protection and peace of mind you’ll receive.Tags: Home insurance, property, protect
